RUNE II Spring 2020 Roadmap

Hi everyone! I’m very pleased today to share with y’all something that has been asked about for a while: The RUNE II Roadmap. This roadmap will be updated as our development team continues working on RUNE II. Here are the things that we are going to be working on over the next few months:

Combat

We feel that combat in RUNE II needs a lot of improvement. We’re in the process of redesigning combat flow and touching a lot of the core systems. For example, some of the changes we’re looking at are making blocks timed instead of currently being held indefinitely, expanding “pain delays” so you can’t spam your weapon while getting hit, and removing stamina drain from light attacks. Currently we are in the initial implementation and balance stages of this. Look for more information about Combat 2.0 coming soon.

Ages of Ragnarok

In Quality of Life patch 1 that we put out on January 30th, we made the Age of Night significantly darker. Our plan is to turn the current Ages of Ragnarok up to 11 by making them more distinct with a ton of visual polish. Additionally, we’re going to be tuning and balancing the design of each Age to make it feel as unique of an experience as possible. For instance, what if the world map changed and some areas that were inaccessible in a previous age were now able to be explored? Plus, an oft-referenced Age may see its return…

Core Loop improvements

We’ve heard your feedback that the core loop of getting artifacts to fight Loki is too monotonous and repetitive. We are talking a lot internally about ways to break that up. What if the Ragnarok Timer didn’t start until you completed a number of actions in an age? What if there was no timer at all? What if the artifacts gave you bonuses within Midgard based on how and when they were collected? Within this core loop, we’re additionally looking at ways to make the world feel more alive.

User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX)

There are so many improvements we want to make to the user interface and user experience of RUNE II. In no particular order, here are some of the things that we’re looking at: Visual loot differentiation. Inventory management. Search bar for recipes. Auto-grouping items and recipes. Auto-sorting items. Gear comparison. Character UI and paper dolls. Quick move, quick drop, quick dismantle, stack cooking. Compass improvements, co-op map waypoints. Better stats. Path focusing. Accessibility options.

Bug Fixing, Optimization, Quality of Life Updates

We’re constantly working on fixing bugs and optimizing RUNE II. We want as many people as possible to be able to run RUNE II on PC and not have to worry as much about system specs. This will be an always-ongoing effort. Similarly, Quality of Life updates are always at the forefront of our minds. When you interact with these systems on a minute-by-minute basis, all the little tweaks and improvements add up to make the experience that much better.

And more!

This is just the tip of the iceberg for how we want to update RUNE II. From making the loot that you get more meaningful to reworking character progression and animations, our small but mighty team is excited to get to work on making RUNE II the best game it can be. Additionally, we are looking into the best ways to improve upon RUNE II’s PvP mode, like adding new PvP maps and more game modes like Arena and Headball. We are also looking at the best ways to integrate mod tools and mapping support into RUNE II. When we have an update on these topics, we’ll share more information.

April Official Server Consolidation and Save Data

Hi everyone,

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep RUNE II in the best state it can be, we have consolidated official co-op servers. To ensure minimal player interruption, we have transferred all save data onto the remaining servers.  Additionally, we are going to raise the maximum player limit on certain co-op servers from 4 to 8 players.

The following US East servers will have their save files moved to 172.107.179.205 (East-Coop2) and will be shut down on 4/1/2020:

  • 172.107.179.50 – East-Coop16

  • 172.107.197.58 – East-Coop18

How do I host a co-op game session for others to join?

To host your own joinable co-op multiplayer session, just type in the “Hosted Game Name” field, add an optional password below, wait for UPNP to work it’s automatic port forwarding magic, and hit confirm to enter RUNE II! It’s finally that simple.

Other co-op hosting methods are not supported.

If you don’t want to host a game and just want to play single player, LEAVE THESE FIELDS BLANK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I’m hosting a session with no password. When my friend tries to join via the server browser, they see a password. but the server browser says I have one on it.

A: Your ports may not be open. Try to direct connect. If you get the message “connection failed, server not found”, go through the guide below to ensure your ports are open.

Q: I put in a password but I got kicked to the main menu?

A: Passwords are case-sensitive. Please ensure that you are typing the password exactly.

Q: Why can’t I see my friend’s hosted game?

A: Make sure you and your host are on the same version of RUNE II. Version number can be found in the lower right corner of the main menu.

Q: I’m getting Error Code 14 when trying to host a game. What does that mean?

A: UPNP is unable to make a connection with your gateway device. Please login to your router and check to make sure that UPNP is enabled. You may need to follow the instructions below to manually open ports.

Q: My AT&T (or other brand) router doesn’t support UPNP, can I still host a multiplayer game?

A: Yes. Please follow the instructions below.

I want to customize my RUNE II experience for me and my friends further, how do I do that?

Change any of the variables that are listed in this blog post and copy them into your engine.ini (don’t forget to hit save!), then start RUNE II normally and enable your game to be hosted from the Campaign menu like normal.

How do I host a co-op game session for others to join?

To host your own joinable co-op multiplayer session without UPNP, you will need a little bit of technical knowledge. Let’s walk through some of the basics. NOTE: This guide is written for hosting a RUNE II co-op game session on a Windows home computer. Other hosting formats are not officially supported.

First things first, you will need to go into your modem or router settings and port forward ports 7777-7781. If you aren’t familiar with where your port forwarding menu in your router is. Search for “ROUTERMODELNUMBER + port forward” into Google. Make sure that you port forward using your IPV4. You can find your IPV4 in your computer by opening the Windows command prompt and typing in “ipconfig”

Port forwarding will happen via your modem, router, of modem/router combo. Here are a few samples to get you started.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding

https://portforward.com/

https://www.whatismyip.com/port-forwarding/

Next, we’ll need to unblock ports 7777-7781 on your local PC. The local PC is the one you are hosting the RUNE II server on. While unblocking ports primarily happen in your firewall, depending on setup this could be in software, hardware, or both. For this setup, we will be unblocking ports in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.

Go to “New Rule” in the actions pane.

We’re unblocking ports, so select “port”

RUNE II uses TCP/IP, so select TCP up top. Fill in “7777-7781” under specific local ports.

We want to allow connections so people can join your hosted server.

This one depends on your network settings. Select all boxes that apply to your network.

Give this inbound rule a name and optional description, and click finish.

You can verify that your settings are correct by checking the properties for the inbound rule.

RUNE II God Slayer and Berserker Rage Edition Updates

RUNE II God Slayer and Berserker Rage Edition Updates

09 / 28 / 20

Earlier last week we were alerted of an issue that was preventing the Berserker Rage and God Slayer bonuses from showing up correctly in inventories. This is now resolved internally and will be fixed in the next live patch on October 5, 2020.

So what happened that caused these items from not showing up correctly? In the past 10 months, we’ve gotten a ton of community feedback that players who purchased the RUNE II Standard Edition and wanted a way to upgrade to the Berserker Rage or God Slayer editions, but did not (or could not) want to refund RUNE II and repurchase their chosen edition. In working with Epic Games Store Support we implemented new tech that would allow for upgrade paths.

When we were testing the upgrade paths internally, everything came back green across the board. We logged into our existing live game characters and saw that the God Slayer and Berserker Rage bonuses were populating correctly. We made a lot of new accounts and tested the upgrade paths that way as well, so a new Standard Edition account had the correct items, a Standard Edition >> Berserker Rage upgrade account had the additional Berserker weapons and armor, the Berserker Rage >> God Slayer upgrade account had the God Slayer weapons and armor, etc.

Then the reports started coming in from players on our official Discord that they weren’t able to see bonus content that they had purchased. Immediately we reached out to our friends at Epic Games to get a full list of all active entitlement and ownership IDs within RUNE II to check that we hadn’t missed any when we were hooking up the upgrade paths system. In the process of checking the entitlements, we discovered an issue where the new tech that we implemented for upgrades was not checking correctly with the old tech to confirm a player’s entitlement ID. Our existing characters on our internal builds were unaffected and showed the God Slayer gear. We discovered and were able to reproduce this issue when we created new characters on our internal builds that did not show any God Slayer gear.

To resolve this issue, we have updated all entitlement IDs to use our new and simplified system. We are in the process of triple checking that the below entitlements and upgrade path entitlements populate successfully:

  • Standard edition entitlements

  • Berserker Rage entitlements

  • God Slayer entitlements

  • Standard edition entitlements >> Berserker Rage upgrade entitlements >> God Slayer upgrade entitlements

  • Berserker Rage entitlements >> God Slayer upgrade entitlements

Once we verify that all of these are working successfully and as intended this fix will be submitted into our next live patch. We’ll also be able to turn on the store pages for players to upgrade to the Berserker Rage or God Slayer packs from their previous edition.

Additionally, all God Slayer edition owners will get an in-game item for free as a token of goodwill. No action is required to claim this item, it will be automatically added to your account when you login to RUNE II after our next live update on October 5, 2020.

Please note that in order to use the Berserker Rage and God Slayer bonuses you will need to launch RUNE II through the Epic Games Launcher and not the direct shortcut to the install directory. Big thanks to community member phaz0r on our Discord for helping us figure this one out!

On behalf of myself and the entire Studio 369 dev team, thanks for sticking with us as we’ve worked to resolve this issue.

-Mitch

Tl;dr: Berserker Rage and God Slayer bonus gear not showing in your inventory is a bug and will be fixed in the next patch on October 5 2020. ALL God Slayer edition owners get an additional in-game item for free.
